SYMPHONIC winds

Enrollment: 65
Periods 3, 4, 5 percussion

Combining students from 3rd and 4th periods and percussionist from 5th period, this is an intermediate ensemble designed to enhance students’ fundamental skills and develop high school proficient level music standards.

Prior musical experience is required. Participation in the Blue Star Regiment is required for all Symphonic Band Members. During the fall they work primarily on marching music. Around November they start on concert music for festival in March.

Grade 3 and 4 literature is a staple of this band. Performances include concerts and SCSBOA festivals.

WIND symphony

Enrollment: 44
Period 6 and 5 percussion

The Wind Symphony meets sixth period and is made up of mostly juniors and seniors. The Wind Symphony is an audition only band designed for students with advanced musical and technical skills. One year of participation in the Symphonic or Concert Band is required for all students. The W.S. plays high-level wind band literature, and performs in concerts, community events, and festivals (local and away). Private instruction is strongly recommend for this group. Students are also required to participate in the Blue Star Regiment.

The most advanced concert band, members are selected by audition or testing. The Wind Symphony performs advanced literature and offers a college level experience in conjuction with the IB Music cirriculum. Members are expected to have a high level of musicianship and advance skill on their instrument. Percussionists are chosen to perform with this band from the 5th period advanced ensemble. This ensemble has more performances throughout he year that the other concert ensembles, and participation in the Blue Star Regiment is required for all Wind Symphony members.

This ensemble is designed to expose high-level students to the wealth of high quality music written for chamber winds. The Chamber Winds is drawn from the most senior and advanced musicians from this class as well as percussionists from 5th period.

CHAMBER players

The John W. North Chamber Players were formed in 2007 by Adam Kehl. This group specializes in the performance of wind chamber music ranging from 3-17 players, and including all wind and percussion instruments. The personnel for this group is made up of members from the John W. North Wind Symphony and percussion ensemble, and changes based on the instrumentation needs of each piece. This ensemble is designed to expose high-level students to the wealth of high quality music written for chamber winds.

The Chamber Players personnel is made up of members from the Wind Symphony and the advanced percussion ensemble, and membership changes based on the instrumentation needs of each piece.
